Shun celebrates its 15th anniversary

We look back at the milestones that fill Shun's history.

A lot can happen in 15 years. In that time period, Shun has emerged as a leading premium cutlery brand. Time has flown by, but Shun’s accomplishments are plentiful. To celebrate Shun’s 15th anniversary, we proudly reflect on our history.

Shun’s impact was felt almost immediately when it was first introduced in 2002. The Classic series served as the brand’s entry into the kitchen market, featuring beautiful layered Damascus cladding. The Classic series has stood the test of time and continues to be our best-selling series, serving in kitchens around the world.

While the Shun brand may be young, its origins trace back over 100 years. At that time, Saijiro Endo established the company that would become Kai. Originally, Kai produced pocketknives and later grew to produce kitchen cutlery and many other products.

Even now, the century-old principle of handcrafted quality drives Shun, which has brought this ancient ethos to the U.S. market. Chefs and home cooks from all over the world now enjoy the Japanese craftsmanship and innovation for which Shun is known.

Each Shun piece is carefully handcrafted, taking at least 100 individual steps to complete, sometimes many more. To achieve a pristine finished product, Shun uses state-of-the-art technology and premium materials that shine in professional and home kitchens.

That high standard has led to many accolades for the brand. Over the course of 15 years, Shun has accumulated numerous Blade Show Kitchen Knife of the Year Awards — from 2003’s Classic Hollow-Ground Santoku to last year’s Hikari Chef’s Knife.

But for us, innovation is an ongoing process. Shun users can expect more top quality pieces for years to come. Today, Shun looks back at its 15-year history. The next milestone awaits, and we can’t wait to travel there with you.
